Smartwatch Alert Mimicking Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator Alarm During Sleep

Wearable devices with built in arrhythmia detection capabilities are now widely available for consumer puchase. Despite FDA clearance specifically for those who do not have a diagnosed arrhythmia, many patients with pre-existing arrhythmias are using such devices for surveillance. There is growing concern for healthcare over-utilization as well as false positives and negatives in arrhythmia detection. We report a 71-year-old male patient with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) who mistook his Apple watch vibrations as ICD vibratory alarms while asleep; leading to undue personal stress and excess utilization in healthcare resources.
