The Role of Echocardiography as a Predictor of the Incidence and Progression of Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is the most frequent sustained arrhythmia and may have hazardous consequences. In recent years, major advances have occurred in echocardiography, with new techniques and applications being developed. This paper describes the role of echocardiography in the assessment and prediction of non-valvular atrial fibrillation development,  progression  and  outcomes.  A  detailed  description  of  most  studies regarding this subject and unsolved questions that lack validation is presented. A special emphasis will be put on new techniques that allow the assessment of myocardial deformation and their possible role in the way we treat these patients.
