Effect of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

Dietary fish oils have demonstrated a beneficial electrophysiological, autonomic and anti-inflammatory effect on both atrial and ventricular tissue and are well tolerated. Multiple clinical trials, focusing on various subsets of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), have studied the role of omega 3 fatty acids and their potential role in reducing the incidence of this common arrhythmia. However, the results have been inconsistent, likely attributable to the complexity of AF. This article reviews in detail the basic and clinical research studies of fish oil in the treatment of AF.
